Newcastleton

About the Village
Newcastleton, with its broad Georgian streets and open squares, was purpose designed and built from scratch by the Duke of Buccleuch in 1792. Due to the changes in agriculture there was a need for more village-based employment such as handloom weaving. The houses were built with large windows to let in light for the new cottage industries.
The town has a post office, several pubs, an antique shop, a bank, a grocery and several guest houses. Also the garage will help with bike repairs and there is also the interesting Liddesdale Heritage Centre. If your time and energy allow, don't miss a short detour to Hermitage Castle. This mysterious and magical place not only witnessed long years of turbulent border reiving, but it played host to the tragic Mary Queen of Scots when she snatched two hours' rendezvous with her lover Bothwell.
